Never Keep Data in One Place Only

Recently I had someone call me in a panic because the flash drive containing years of files had become corrupted. Of course no one panics if they have another copy handy, but I had to ask anyway. “I don’t suppose you keep a backup anywhere?” The answer after a short sigh, “No, I know I should”

Unfortunately, as in many of these cases, the data was gone forever because the media had failed. With any type of media, be it hard drive, flash drive, or any type of disk, it will eventually fail. Never is the saying “nothing last forever” more valid than with storage media.

Taking the time to set up a proper backup system can save a lot of future grief. If you value any of your files (personal documents, business documents, photos, accounting and tax files, contact lists, etc.) this is an absolute must.

In general the best practice is to use the 3-2-1 rule of backup. This means you should:

  • Have at least three independent copies of your data.
  • Store the copies on two different types of media.
  • Keep one backup copy offsite.
